Joseph R. Petrole, Sr.

Joseph R. Petrole, Sr., 93, of Claremont Avenue, Tamaqua, PA died on Tuesday, June 02, 2009, in the Schuylkill Medical Center, South Jackson Street, Pottsville, PA. He was the husband of Margaret (nee Christian) Petrole. Born on October 6, 1915 in Treskow, PA, he was a son of the late Peter and Mary Sue (nee Mastronicola) Petrole. While attending McAdoo High School, he played basketball and football. Joe was involved in the coal industry at an early age and remained active in the mining of coal silt under “Joe Petrole Coal” until the time of his death. He was a co-founder of Petrole Motor Company in Leighton with his brother Nick and later owned an original “Tucker” car franchise. Joe incorporated Valley Enterprises, Inc in 1948, which built and operated the Valley Drive-In Theatre and the Valley Pool in Ginthers from 1949 to 1988. Valley Enterprises now operates rental property at that same location. A member of Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Tamaqua, Joe was a lifelong Yankees fan and an avid horseracing fan. In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Joseph Petrole and his wife Linda of Hometown, PA, Gerald Petrole and his wife, Deborah of West Penn, PA; George Petrole and his wife, Claudia of Lehighton, PA, and Larry Petrole and his wife, Sara of McAdoo, PA; grandsons, Gerald Petrole, Jr. and his wife Susan of West Penn, PA and Mark Petrole of Barnesville, PA; granddaughter, Jacqueline Kerlin and her husband, Michael of Philadelphia, PA; one great grandson, Christopher Clemson Petrole; and many nieces and nephews. The last member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by brothers, Peter Petrole, Nick Petrole, Rocco Petrole, Anthony Petrole, Salvador Petrole, James Petrole, Albert Petrole, Frank Petrole, and Morris Petrole and sisters, Victoria Debellas and Elizabeth Rymond. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, June 5 in Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 307 Pine Street, Tamaqua with The Rev. William Linkchorst officiating. Interment in Sky View Memorial Park, Hometown, PA will immediately follow services. Call 7-9 PM, Thursday and 8:30-9:30 AM, Friday at the Zizelmann-Roche Funeral Home, 500 East Broad Street, Tamaqua.
