Ellen M. Boyd, age 92 of Carlyle, entered into rest on Sunday, February 21, 2010, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville.
Mrs. Boyd was born on November 5, 1917, in Fairfield, Illinois, a daughter of Perry Lloyd and Etta (Duke) Hill. She married Wilbur Keith “Bud” Boyd on August 25, 1947, in Paducah, Kentucky and he preceded her in death on May 4, 2001.
Mrs. Boyd is survived by 4 sons – Roger Boyd and wife Rita of Sparta, Illinois, Larry Boyd and wife Carla of Carlyle, David Boyd of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin and Dennis Boyd of Bloomington, Illinois; a daughter – Janet Foley of Garfield, Washington; 8 grandchildren – Jennifer Wuebbles, Krista Schoellhorn, Paul, Matthew and Terri Lynn Boyd and Sarah, Kate and Josh Foley and 3 great grandchildren – Bridget and Brandon Blankenship and Madison Schoellhorn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister – Hester Hill and 2 brothers – Murray and Morris Hill.
Mrs. Boyd earned her Master’s Degree from University of Illinois in 1938. She was a school teacher, and taught in Equality, Valmeyer, Carlyle and Breese schools. Ellen was past president and member of the Illinois Retired Teachers’ Association and was a Community Unit School District #1 board member for 12 years. Mrs. Boyd was a founder of the 4-H House at University of Illinois and led various 4-H clubs for over 50 years. She had worked in Extension Services in Randolph County, Southern Illinois Agency for Aging, and helped at the Women’s Building at the Clinton County Fair for many years. Ellen was a member of the Illinois Senior Hall of Fame and the First United Methodist Church in Carlyle, where she taught Sunday school and led Bible study classes.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, February 25, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church in Carlyle with Rev. Keith Michaels officiating. Interment will follow at Carlyle Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. at Zieren Day Funeral Home and on Thursday from 9:00 A.M. – service time at the church.
Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mrs. Boyd may be made to Illinois 4-H House Assn., or the Carlyle First United Methodist Church, and will be received at the Funeral Home.
