CARBONDALE, Mary Ida Wayman Holder, 94, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the St .Luke's Presbyterian-Episcopal Hospital, Chesterfield, MO. Mrs. Holder was born on February 7, 1915, the daughter of Nell Faris (nee Overly) and Louis R. Wayman, M.D., in Murphysboro, IL.
Mrs. Holder was a graduate of Southern Illinois Normal (now SIU) with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. in previous years she taught in the Carbondale public school system.
During World War II, Mrs. Holder accompanied her husband who was an officer in the U.S. Navy, while on tour at various naval bases on the west and east coasts. She also taught elementary education in the San Diego, CA and Chapel Hill, NC public school systems.
In earlier years Mrs. Holder, recognized for her exquisite beauty and grace, modeled for such fashion houses as Neiman Marcus, Montaldo's, and Ransahoff's of San Francisco. While in college, she modeled young women's fashion designs, hats, and accessories.
Mary Wayman Holder was an avid gardener, an accomplished violinist, and linguist of several romance languages, who even in later years was not shy about correcting misuse of the English Lexicon, or a verb tense in French, Italian or Latin. She also had a passion for home design and interior decorating and in 1971 was awarded the Best Home Design Award upon completion of a family residence in Carbondale, IL.
Mrs. Holder was active in educational, civic, religious, and health care advocacy forums, having donated her time and financial resources to promote child welfare and advocacy for women and children in education and healthcare organizations. In earlier years, she was a Sunday School Teacher and Deaconess in the First Christian Church of Carbondale, IL and most recently attended Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Ladue, MO. She was a Charter Member of the Women's Auxiliary of the former Doctors Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, IL.
As a younger women, in addition to managing a busy household, a husband, and fours sons, Mrs. Holder was an avid bridge player. She enjoyed and treasured her pets, an Amazon parrot, Polly, and four show Scottish Terriers, Cyrus-Kirk-Wonder-and Winston.
Mary Wayman Holder was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Louis R. Wayman, a brother, Louis Wayman, one sister, Helen Wayman Bock, and husband, Lynn C. Holder. She is survived by four sons, Lynn W. Holder, M.D. of Manitowoc, WI, Barrett K. Holder, M.D., of Table Rock, MO, Mark S. Holder, M.D. of Peoria, IL, Judd F. Holder, PhD of Chesterfield, MO, and two nieces, Mary Elizabeth Bock Tiedeman of Corvalis, OR, and Carolyn Jane Bock Supple of Sarasota, FL.
