Maury Drane Smith, Sr.

February 2, 1927 - May 24, 2009

Maury Drane Smith, a resident of Montgomery, born February 2, 1927, died May 24, 2009. He was the son of Abb Jackson Smith and Rose Drane Sellers Smith, each of whom predeceased him. He received his B. S. and J. D. degrees from the University of Alabama. He practiced law in Montgomery continuously since 1952 and was a senior member of the Balch & Bingham law firm. He was an Assistant Attorney General of Alabama, a past President of the Montgomery County Bar Association and an Emeritus member of the Board of Trustees for the University of Alabama. He was President of the Alabama Heritage Foundation Board of Directors and a member of the Board of Trustees for the Alabama Archives and History Foundation. He was a past chairman of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, President of the Montgomery Area United Way, chairman of the Montgomery Committee of 100, Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a member of the Alabama Law Institute. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Montgomery. He served in the Army Specialized Training Program and the United States Infantry during World War II. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and served that church in many leadership positions.
He is survived by his wife, Lucile Martin Smith, daughter Martha Martin Smith Vandervoort of Anniston (Dr. Kenneth Luckie Vandervoort), daughter Sally Drane Smith Legg of Birmingham (William Anderson Legg, Jr.) and son Dr. Maury Drane Smith, Jr. of Randolph, Vermont (Adele Turgeon Smith), grandchildren Lucile Martin Vandervoort, Kenneth Luckie Vandervoort, Jr., William Maury Vandervoort of Anniston, Martha Martin Legg, Elizabeth Rose Legg of Birmingham, Cecile Martin Smith and Maury Drane Smith III, of Randolph, Vermont; brother Abb Jackson Smith, Jr. of Geneva, brother Joel Pierce Smith, Sr. of Eufaula, brother Robert Sellers Smith of Huntsville, sister Sarah Margaret Smith Price (Mrs. John S. Price) of Montgomery, brother Saul Douglas Smith of Montgomery.
A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist of Montgomery at 11 AM on Wednesday, May 27, 2009. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 to 11 AM on that date.
