On Friday, August 2nd, 2013, God called home a beautiful angel, wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend into eternal rest, Mrs. Earline Greene Wells of Courtland, Virginia. Earline was born on November 18th, 1934 in Southampton County, VA to the late Mr. Henry Ward Beecher Greene and the late Mrs. Margaret Ann Greene. She was baptized at an early age at Zion Southampton A. M. E. Zion Church. She retired from the Norfolk Naval Supply Center.
Earline was predeceased by her husband, Henry Blow Griffin, Sr., also known as “Jake.” She was also predeceased by one son, Shawntae M. Griffin, a granddaughter, Jade A. Reid, three sisters, Hyla Mae Herring, Margaret Perry, and Virginia Christian, and one brother, Alphonso Greene. Later, Earline met and married David Wells. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother always sacrificing her needs for the needs of her family and friends. Her generosity and giving spirit have touched her entire family and so many others.
Left to cherish Earline’s beautiful memory on Earth are her husband, David Wells, and nine children: Charlie Greene (Gladys) of Norfolk, VA, Mary A. Williams of Courtland, VA, Hyla B. Griffin of Ridgeland, SC, Helena B. Griffin of Chesapeake, VA, Beverly Y. Griffin of Emporia, VA, Henry B. Griffin, Jr. (Lisa) of Hampton, VA, Angela Griffin of Newport News, VA, Latesha K. Reid (Fredderick) of Franklin, VA, and Tyrena B. Griffin of Savannah, GA.
Also to lovingly remember her, Earline leaves twenty-six grandchildren: Dr. Natasha Greene Leathers (Jerome), Tonia Greene, Latorial D. Faison (Carl), Ronald E. Williams, Jr. Rondever G. Williams, Monica C. Bishop (Anthony), Darris L. Thomas, Imari R. Griffin, Drakkar D. Griffin, Robert Mitchell, Destinee Mitchell, Michelle Joyner, Catherine L. Hill, Michael R. Hill, Jr., Stacie Hill, Tracie Hill, Charnese Hill, Ciara L. Ellsworth, Bianca S. Ellsworth, Linwood D. Ellsworth, Jr., Quachayla T. Griffin, Jaden Reid, K’shun Peterkin, Derion G. Newsome, Demaudre T. Newsome, and Avery S. Gleaton.
Earline was a wonderful great-grandmother to fourteen great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Tyler, Nicholas, Carl, Kendall, Kaleb, Destiny, DuRae, Za’Niyah, Quadaysha, Darris, Jr., Zakiya, Shawn, and Amelia as well as several of her nieces and nephews. She also leaves with fondest memories a sister, Mary Comerford, of Brooklyn, NY, and a host of very special nieces and nephews, cousins, relatives, friends, and some very special ladies in her life: Ernell Winfield, Rosa Byrd, Mary Lizzie Greene, Maggie Thomas, and Cynthia Mines.
