Age 77, Lawton - Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Thursday at the Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Rev. William F. Todd, senior pastor at Centenary United Methodist Church officiating.
Sgt Hettiger died Sunday.
Burial with full military honors will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
He was born June 17, 1931 in South Hampton, Long Island, New York to Frank Dayton and Anna (Fruhauf) Hettiger. He married Eleonore Bachmeier on February 6, 1958 in Erlenbach, Binswangen, Germany. Sgt Hettiger was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He also served in Germany. He retired from the Army after twenty two years. He received many medals and awards including the Korean Service Medal (2 awards), Korean Defense Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation (1 knot), Combat Infantry Badge – Korea and Vietnam (2 awards), Antarctica Service Medal – Tule, Greenland, U.S. Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation, World War II Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Expert Rifle Award, Expert Grenade Award, Expert Machine Gun Award, Expert Pistol Award, Army Presidential Unit Citation, Army Commendation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal (5 awards). Sgt Hettiger was active in many community functions. He was a past president of the Humane Society of Lawton and was involved with the South Central Shufflers and the KK Kickers.
Survivors include his wife, of the home, a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Brenda Hettiger, a grandson, Joe Hettiger, Jr. and his wife Dawn, two granddaughters, Michele Winham and her husband, Alvin, and Brandi Hettiger and eight great grandchildren, Makayla and Ashlee Hettiger, Austin Weryavah, Madison and Lauren Winham, David and Nicholas Crosby and Lacy Hettiger-Jones, all of Lawton.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Frank John Hettiger.
