Christine H. Bowra, age 100, a resident of Los Lunas, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2009. Mrs. Bowra moved from Texas to the Territory of New Mexico in 1909. She enjoyed listening to the Victrola and singing and did fine lace crochet. Mrs. Bowra was the first director of public welfare both San Juan and Union Counties and she retired from Sandia Base Hospital as a budget analyst. She enjoyed crossword puzzles playing with her great-grandson, Justice Byers and she was a member of First Baptist Church of Los Lunas, where she had been a Sunday school teacher for many years. In addition, she was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star Adah Chapter in Albuquerque.
Mrs. Bowra was preceded in death by her husband, Harry R. Bowra; son, Claude R. Strait; son-in-law, Norman I. Ostroff; parents, Elijah Claude Herron and Jesse Mildred Herron and five siblings. She is survived by her children, Patricia B. Schooley and husband, Craig of Los Lunas; Charlotte A. Ostroff of Casa Robles, CA and Carolyn J. Brasch and husband, Tom of Spokane, WA. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren, 1 niece, 2 nephews and a cousin, Lucille Woods of Albuquerque.
Mrs. Bowra will be laid to rest with her husband at a later date in Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Transportation Fund of the Ballut Abyad Shrine Center in Albuquerque.
