Glendine Jean Baxter

Life Legacy

Glendine Jean Baxter, aged 79, died at her home on Smith Mountain Lake on
Friday, August 31, 2012. She was born in Detroit, Michigan, and was the daughter of the late Rosa Hutchins Clay Baxter and Glenn Baxter.
A licensed clinical social worker, Jean headed the employee counseling program at the Washington (D.C.) Gas Company and also had a private practice in Alexandria, Virginia.
She was loved by the many clients she guided to sobriety and wellness and greatly respected by her fellow professionals who valued her sage advice.
Jean's many friends treasured her intelligence, her sharp wit and her incomparable sense of humor. She had that priceless gift of being a good listener who also possessed a keen insight into human nature. She herself found comfort and companionship in the Unitarian Universalists Church of Roanoke.
She is survived by her longtime partner Dorothy Provine, her good friends Barbara Larremore, Suzi Newton, Judy Nelson, Joy Bruce and Beth Watts. Jean especially loved her honorary "sistahs', Kay Provine and Mary Jo Briggs, and delighted in the hilarious birthday celebrations cooked up by the girls. They will toast her over blackened redfish at the Mayflower.
Special thanks to Pam and Lydia of Good Samaritan Hospice, and Dr. Carolyn Clark. You are wonderful.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the battered women's shelter in your
locality or any "feed the hungry" program.
