Life Legacy


On Wednesday, February 27th William Gavin (Bill) Noffsinger passed away at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.  He is survived by Marilyn, his wife of 62 years; two sons James R. and Rosa of Fayetteville and John W. and Mary of Waynesboro, VA; three grandchildren: Mia, Willie, and Joey Noffsinger; and an older brother, Estil.  He was predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Verna Noffsinger, and by a granddaughter, Katrina Noffsinger.   Bill was born on February 13th, 1920 in Muhlenberg County Kentucky, where his family had lived for many generations.  He grew up on a 100-acre tobacco farm that had no electricity or running water until Bill was in high school.  In 1937 he headed for the University of Kentucky, where he majored in political science.  One semester before graduation war broke out.  Bill entered the U. S. Army and was sent to southern England, where he served as a second lieutenant.  During the war, while stationed in Rockf ord, Illinois, he met Marilyn, and they married in September of 1945.  He then finished his studies at Kentucky.   After the war Bill and Marilyn moved to Washington, D.C., where Bill worked for over thirty years in the personnel office of the Veterans Administration before retiring in 1977.  After retirement and a subsequent move to Lakeland, Florida, he and Marilyn spent much of their time traveling both in this country and abroad, having had the opportunity to visit among other places Switzerland, Greece, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, and South Africa.  In 1999 Bill and Marilyn moved to Fayetteville.   Bill was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church, most recently joining the congregation at National Heights Baptist.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, omnivorously reading the daily newspaper, eating peach ice cream, and following Kentucky basketball.   Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 3, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at Carl J Mowell & Son Chapel, Fayetteville with Rev. Bill Scarborough officiating. Interment will follow at Westminster Gardens.  The family will receive friends Monday from 10:00 to 11:00AM.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Heart Association.
