Alvina M. “Mitch” Wanserski, age 88, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Sunday, August 16, 2009, at Emerald Valley in Appleton. She was born on February 23, 1921, the daughter of the late Philip and Julia (Wroblewski) Michalkiewicz.
Mitch was united in marriage to Ervin Wanserski on July 1, 1944 in Menasha; he preceded her in death on May 19, 1982.
Mitch was a member of the St. John Rosary Society, the Sacred Heart Society, Polish Falcon Auxiliary, and the Germania Auxiliary as well as many bowling and dart ball leagues.
Mitch loved spoiling her grandchildren, playing cards, entertaining her friends, throwing home-runs in dart ball and baking, especially pecan tassies. Being an extremely social and generous person, she would stand for hours in the aisles of Wanserski’s, talking to customers and giving many of her baked goods away. Mitch will be most remembered, however, for her French potato salad which became a legacy of Wanserski’s Food Market, where she and Erv worked so hard together for forty years.
She is survived by five children, Julie (Guy) Romagnoli, Jackson, WI; Patricia (Bernie) Sandlin, Menasha; Elizabeth (Ken) Glisczinski, Menasha; David (Julie) Wanserski, Menasha and Kathryn (Mark) McEnroe, Oshkosh; 8 grandchildren: Gina and Brian Romagnoli, Nicole and Katie Sandlin, Aaron and Jennie Wanserski and Amanda and Andrew McEnroe; one brother-in-law, Richard Wanserski; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Pozolinski, Julane (Raymond) Zielinski, Maxine (Conrad) Ostrowski, Mary Wanserski, many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ellen, who passed away as an infant; two sisters, Anne Grogan and Cele Voigtman; two brothers, John and Phillip Michalkiewicz.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at 11:00 am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 516 De Pere Street, Menasha, with Father Larry Canavera officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until the time of service at the church. Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Menasha
We would like to express our gratitude to the wonderful staff at Emerald Valley and Asera Hospice Care for the many years of compassionate and loving care of our mother.
