Life Legacy

Dena (Fillips) Vaffis, 85, of Fremont died peacefully Tuesday evening with her family by her side. She was born December 6, 1925 in Lima, OH, the daughter of George and Aphrodite Fillips. On May 26, 1956 she married James C. Vaffis in Lima, OH.

Prior to marrying James, she was employed by Lima Baldwin Hamilton as the executive assistant to the president. Forever remembered for her Greek culinary skills, she was also the master baker for Fremont’s Jimmy John’s Restaurant’s famous homemade pecan, pumpkin and custard pies. An avid golfer, she introduced the game to her husband and together they developed a world of wonderful friends around the game, both in Fremont and in Florida.

Dena was a lifelong member of Cosmopolitan and a docent at the Hayes Museum at Spiegel Grove. She volunteered at Fremont Memorial Hospital, and for many years served as a buyer for the hospital gift shop. She loved traveling around the world with her husband and friends, and instilled the curiosity and joy of travel in her children. Always an impeccable hostess, she maintained her elegance and caring nature towards her grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends her entire life. To her husband and children she will always be our most enthusiastic cheerleader, toughest critic and best friend.

Surviving is her husband of 54 years, James C. Vaffis of Fremont, OH; daughters Ann (Pete Schumann) Vaffis of Washington, D.C.; Gigi ( David Wagner) Vaffis of Chicago, IL; grandsons, Wade Wagner and James Wagner. She was preceded in death by her parents, son George Vaffis and sisters Zee Kanatas and Pauline Hontas.

Visitation will take place Friday from 4 to 6P.M. at Keller-Ochs-Koch-Mason Funeral & Cremation Service, 416 S. Arch Street, Fremont, Ohio. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday morning at the funeral home with additional visitation immediately prior to services beginning at 10:00A.M, followed by burial at Oakwood Cemetery.
