Avaleen Grace Eberly
April 5, 1915 - August 1, 2009
Avaleen Grace (Gfell) Eberly died at the home of her daughter in Great Falls, Virginia on August 1, 2009.

She was born in Fremont, Ohio on April 5, 1915 to John H. and Mary M. (Fisher) Gfell. She was the second youngest of 10 children. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1933, and worked for the Fremont News-Messanger on the justowriter device. Her last residence in Fremont was 1815 Melody Drive until she retired to Virginia in 1992.

She married Charles W. Eberly on September 20, 1938, in St. Joseph’s Church. They met while in high school. Initially, they made their home on Hamlin Street in Fremont where he was a self-employed electrician, specializing in radio repair and installation. With the start of World War II, she began to travel widely with her husband, who had received a commission as an officer in the US Army Signal Corps. Over a span of 23 years, their postings included twice to Germany, once to Korea, and to various Army posts throughout the United States. She attended Milliken University during one such stationing in Decatur, Illinois. In Hanau, Germany, she served as secretary to the commanding officer of the Army depot. In 1964, coincident with their return from the Republic of Korea and Charles’ retirement from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel, they returned to Fremont. Charles died on January 30, 1990.

While in Fremont, Avaleen was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, its Blessed Sacrament Confraternity (a monitor of the 12th division), and its Resurrection Choir. While in Virginia and living near Ft Belvoir, she was a member of The Fairfax Retirement Community’s Catholic Community and its Altar Enhancement Group and Rosary Society.

At the age of 80, she took up floral and landscape painting and became quite accomplished. She was a member of the Belfair Artists and displayed her paintings in the art gallery of The Fairfax. Many of her paintings were purchased, and several of them were published as cover art for various issues of The Consulting Pharmacist magazine.

She is survived by her children - Carol (and Dale) Ellickson of Great Falls, VA; John (and Christina) Eberly of Albuquerque, NM; Joseph W. Eberly of Bowling Green, OH; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Four brothers, five sisters and one grandchild preceded her in death.
