George Richard Davis, 79, of West Lafayette, OH passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday May 11, 2010. George was born near Orange, OH on January 26th, 1931, a son of the late John C. and Naomi L. (Hill) Davis. He graduated from West Lafayette High School in 1948 and joined the Navy in 1951. He served his country as a radio operator aboard the destroyer escort, Whitehurst. He spent his 4 year enlistment in the Pacific and was honorably discharged in 1955. On October 7th 1956, he married the former Dorothy A. Schwindt, who survives along with two children, Lynn A. (Lee) Russell of Newcomerstown, OH and Douglas A. (Jamie) Davis of West Lafayette, OH and five grandchildren; Daniel Russell, Ali, Lexi, Tyler and Tanner Davis. He is also survived by a sister, Shirley L. Davis and a brother, Rodney A. Davis, both of Avon Park, Florida, and many nieces and nephews. Upon returning from the service, he came home to run the family farm. In 1965, with the help of his father and brother, he built River Greens Golf Course, which opened in 1966. In 1969, they purchased and opened River Greens South in Avon Park, Florida, which his brother Rodney owns and operates. In 1993, with the help of his brother, son and son-in-law, he built an additional nine, making the course 27 holes. George devoted the last 43 years of his life to the family business, doing what he loved most. George was a life-long resident of Coshocton County, an active member of 4-H, a life member of the Elks Lodge #1555, past president and life member of the Central Ohio Golf Course Superintendent’s Association, member of the Ohio Golf Course Owner’s Association and a member of the West Lafayette United Methodist Church. He was instrumental in starting the Living Memorial Scholarship Fund for graduates of Ridgewood High School. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at the West Lafayette United Methodist Church on Friday, June 11 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Sue Chidley officiating. The family will greet friends and relatives one hour prior to the memorial service. Following the service, friends and family are invited to a reception at the River Greens Banquet Room for a celebration of George’s life.
