CRANCER, LESTER A., JR. of Ladue, died on Tuesday, November 13, of complications of leukemia. He was 75.
A St. Louis native, Mr. Crancer graduated from Washington University in 1953 and served in the U.S. Army before joining Valley Industries, Inc., which was founded by his father, the late Lester A. Crancer, Sr. Upon his father's death in 1973, Mr. Crancer became Valley's President and Chairman. He retired in 1991.
Active with his church and the St. Louis philanthropic community, Mr. Crancer was a longtime member of the Vestry at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Warson Woods. He served on the boards of the St. Louis Symphony, John Burroughs School, and United Cerebral Palsy of Greater St. Louis. He and his wife, Joan Conway Crancer, shared a lifelong love of art, and the Crancers were honored by the St. Louis Art Museum in 1999 with the Beaux Arts Council Award.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Crancer is survived by his daughter Alice (Stephen) Rudolph of Wilmette, IL, son Dr. Lester A. (Suzanne) Crancer, III, of Godfrey, IL, and his mother, Florence, of Ladue. Other survivors include two sisters, Mary Crancer and Suzanne Byron, a brother, Robert (Barbara), and his brother-in-law, William G. (Christa) Conway. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Amy Joan Crancer, and a brother, David.
A memorial service will be held at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 1551 Bennett Avenue, Warson Woods, MO 63122, at 1:00 p.m., on Monday, November 19. Friends are invited to pay their respects at the time of the service. Please omit flowers.
