Biography

Mayfield Elizabeth Benge, 88, of Westminster, died on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at the Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster. Born October 17, 1924 in Snydersburg, she was the daughter of the late Walter E. and Blanche P. Miller Smith. She was the wife of the late Verlin D. Benge who died November 30, 1960.

She retired October 2011 after 31 years of service at the age of 87, as a billing clerk at Sinai Hospital. She was a life-member of St. Mark's U.C.C. Snydersburg, where she had been sexton many years. She enjoyed church plays and being a liturgist. She was a life-member of Snydersburg Homemakers, where she was the oldest member. She was also a member of the Snydersburg Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She enjoyed reading, listening to music and audiotapes of the Bible, talking to people and she was always willing to give to others.

Surviving are daughters - Brenda A. Brown and husband Jim of Westminster, Sharon E. Weeks and husband Wayne of Taneytown and Paulette E. Smith of Westminster; son Benjamin O. Benge and fiance Vonnie Ditzel of Hampstead; 8 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was the last of her immediate family.

She was predeceased by a son, Verlie A. Benge, in 1999.

Friends may call on Friday, from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm at Eline Funeral Home, 934 S. Main Street, Hampstead. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2012, at 10:00 am at the St. Mark's U.C.C. Church Snydersburg, with Pastor Melvina Stricklin officiating. Interment will be in St. Mark's (Snydersburg) Cemetery.
