Eugene “Gene” Edward Schmitz age 78 of Wascott, WI passed away Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, MN surrounded by his family.
Gene was born April 20, 1931 in Pasadena, CA to the late Alex & Jennie (Erickson) Schmitz. He resided in Wascott since the age of three until recently moving to Lake City, MN. Gene honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1952 – 1954 earning the National Defense Service Medal & Occupation Medal. He was a member of the American Legion, DAV, VFW.Gene met Patricia Bevins at Wilkinson’s Deer Farm in Wascott and they later married in Kentucky on March 8, 1955. Gene retired after 13 years as a Grain Inspector for the State of Wisconsin. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing and nature. Later in life he built a log home from trees he planted with his father, Alex, in the 1940’s.
Among those who survive and gratefully shared his life are his three sons: Dale (Lynn) Schmitz of Bloomington, MN; Douglas Schmitz of Carmichael, CA; Darrin (Kristen) Schmitz of Sun Prairie, WI; one daughter: Debbie Nelson (Greg Huey) of Oronoco, MN; 1 sister: Magdalene Fobear of Duluth, MN; 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife Patricia - July 24, 1970; 1 brother: Raymond - Sept. 16, 1984.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 21, 2009 at the Brown Funeral Home in Minong, WI. Pastor Stephen Floyd will officiate.
Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 20, 2009 & also one hour prior to the service on Friday at the Funeral Home in Minong. Burial will be in the Wascott Cemetery in Wascott, WI. Military rites will be accorded.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Minong, WI.
